They had to endure the heat that they were not used to in the desert. They also had to worry about native tribes attacking them. They needed to worry about supplies and animals. Also they had to make sure their own men would not steal from them. The Nile's source is named after a british queen because the source was undiscovered by the civilized world. Because of this once they discovered it they gave it a name because they did not know the name the native Africans used to call it. The primary technological advancement that the Europeans Africans still only had spears and swords.

The Meiji Restoration of Japan

Japan had isolated itself from the rest of the world for two centuries. Eventually after a century of civil war, Lord Tokugawa declared himself Shogun, ruler of all Japan, in 1615. The Tokugawa Shogunjate was a kingdom built for war that crumbled after 200 years of peace. In 1853 U.S. Commodor Matthew Perry brought 4 ships to the bay near Yedo. The Japanese were astounded by the ships. The Americans wanted resupplies in order to trade with China. If the Japanese failed to meet their demands they would attack Japan who was obviously behind in the technological world. After a revolution in Japan a 16 year old boy who was renamed Meiji became the new emporer of Japan. Eventually Japan started to adapt western ways and customs. They also adapted their technology. That was the Meiji Restoration of Japan.

Industrial Revolution - Inventions

During the Industrial Revolution many inventions were made... The Enclosure Movement was when English landowners began buying up village lands and fencing them in. They then charged people for the use of the land. Viscount Charles Townshend found that if you plant different crops on your land every year, you wouldn't need to let it remain unused for 2 years in order to plant the same crop again. The seed drill, which Jethro Tull invented in 1701, allowed the farmers to sow seeds in well-spaced rows at specific depths. In 1733 a watchmaker made a shuttle that moved back and forth on wheels. The flying shuttle, as it was called was little more than a boat-shaped piece of wood to which yarn was attached Yet it allowed a weaver to work twice as fast.

Simon Bolivar

Simon Bolivar, or The Liberator, lead the rebellion of Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia.
